Shoe Revisited, or The Vagueries of Memory
(Is that how you spell it? Is it even a real word? Anyway...)
So the other day I was fondly reminiscing about the time Pedro lost his shoe, and then we found it. It seems like a common thing, but the whole event has become sort of a family myth, and of course when we did find the shoe there was much rejoicing. His grandmother even went out to buy lottery again, since it's good luck to buy lottery when something lucky happens (not that she needs an excuse to buy lottery, but that's not the point here.) Anyway, I even wrote about it in one of my very first blog posts ever, almost five years ago.
Anyway, I was telling the story to the kids and then remarked that Dani was wearing the very same shoes:

But just now when I dug up the link to that post, I realized that it had been written when Pedro was 16 months old, so it couldn't possibly have been the same shoes that Dani is wearing at 6 months. So despite the fact that whenever I have remembered the story, I have been picturing these shoes, they probably aren't the ones in question. Which makes for a less interesting blog post, unless I want to take as my topic the way that time can shift our perceptions and play havoc with our memories (if you want more on that, visit My Blue Streak for her latest post. Though her story is much more interesting than mine, as hers involves a road trip, the wrecking of a white pick-up truck, and nearly escaping a night in a Mexican jail.)
If, when Dani is 16-or-so months old, I suddenly recognize the actual shoes in question, I'll let you know.
PS. Apparently I am not alone in my misspelling of "vagaries", which was actually how I thought it should be spelled as soon as I finished typing. Did you know what an eggcorn was? Me neither.
PPS. An interesting aside on the vagaries (spelled correctly) of memory.
ETA: Sorry to do this, but I just couldn't let that spelling error stand-- it was driving me crazy. I used to be a good speller, really! I don't know what I was thinking-- rejoycing, indeed. I wonder if that counts as an eggcorn?

kate - oh i find it very odd that i can´t remember things as they were. But it might be because I´ve been taking Echinacea instead of Ginko Biloba. Memory certainly plays tricks on us.
I certainly didn't know what an egg corn was...but now I think I do....I think I just left a spelling error in a comment on another blog. Why doesn't my spell checker work for comments?
